般若

伝説によれば、昔々イバラキと呼ばれる般若がおり、京都の羅生門の前で門に入ってくる人々を殺したものです。ある日、渡辺の綱という侍が羅生門に行ってその鬼を切り伏せることにしました。しかし、その侍が羅生門に着いたときに、そこには般若に代わって美しい女性がいました。
渡辺の綱は門で鬼を待っていたかったのですが、その女性は彼女を町まで案内するように彼に頼むので、２人は一緒に町へ向かいました。
歩いている間に、渡辺の綱はふと美しい女性をちらりと見ました。すると、彼女は怖い鬼になって彼を掴みかかってきました。しかし渡辺の綱はすばやく剣を取り出して、般若の腕を切断しました。鬼は逃げましたが、渡辺の綱は腕を持ち帰り、箱の中に保管しました。

年月が経って、渡辺の綱はその日のことを忘れていました。
そして、ある日伯母さんが彼の家に来ました。いろいろなことについて話しているうちに、やがて「般若の腕を見せてよ」と伯母さんは言いました。
断るわけにはいかないので、渡辺の綱は伯母さんに腕を見せました。
そのとき、彼の伯母さんは般若となり、腕を掴んで家から逃げ出しました。

According to the legend, long ago there was a Hannya named Ibaraki at Rashomon in Kyoto, who used to kill people who tried to enter. One day, a Samurai named Watanabe no Tsuna decided to go to Rashomon and slay the demon. However, when the Samurai reached Rashomon, instead of the Hannya, there was a beautiful woman there.
Watanabe no Tsuna wanted to wait at the gate for the demon, but the woman asked if he would walk her to the town, so the two of them set out together.
Whilst they were walking, Watanabe no Tsuna glanced at the woman by chance. Thereupon, she became a terrifying demon and tried to grab him. However, Watanabe no Tsuna quickly pulled out his sword and severed the Hannya's arm. The demon escaped, but Watanabe no Tsuna took the arm home, and stored it in a box.

Months, years passed, and Watanabe no Tsuna had forgotten about that day.
Then, one day, his aunt came over to his house. While they were discussing various things, his Aunt eventually said "Show me the Hannya's arm!"
Watanabe no Tsuna could not very well refuse, so he showed the arm to his Aunt.
At that time, his Aunt became the Hannya, grabbed the arm and fled from the house.
